A School for Maritime Safety
Maersk Training’s center in Haugesund has a long and rich history, dating back to the establishment of the Norwegian State Maritime Safety School (Statens Havarivernskole) in 1973. The school was created to enhance maritime safety, particularly for the merchant fleet, and began its operational activities in 1974. It offered specialized training in fire safety and life-saving techniques, which were critical skills for Norwegian seafarers.
The purpose of Havarivernskolen was to provide seafarers with essential training in emergency preparedness and crisis management, especially in handling fires and other onboard emergencies. This was a time when safety requirements in the maritime sector were becoming increasingly stringent, and Norway, with its strong maritime tradition, sought to be at the forefront of these developments.
Development and Restructuring
In 1991, the school merged with Haugesund Maritime College to form the Norwegian State Safety College (Statens sikkerhetshøgskole). This fusion reflected a desire to consolidate maritime education and safety training under one institution. A few years later, in 1994, the school became part of Stord/Haugesund University College, further integrating safety training into the higher education system.
As industry needs evolved, the safety training division in Bleivik was separated in 2001 and established as an independent company under the name ResQ AS. ResQ continued to offer comprehensive safety and emergency preparedness training, and the center in Haugesund developed into a leading training hub for offshore, maritime, and land-based industries.
Transition to Maersk Training
In 2022, ResQ was acquired by Maersk Training, a global leader in safety training and competence development. This acquisition made the Haugesund center part of Maersk Training’s international network, and from October 2023, ResQ was fully rebranded as Maersk Training across all locations.
Today, the center offers a broad range of courses covering all requirements set by Offshore Norway, the Norwegian Maritime Authority, and land-based industries. The facility boasts advanced training environments, including fire fields, helicopter decks, and various simulation scenarios designed to provide realistic emergency response training.
From Past to Future
From its origins as Statens Havarivernskole to its current role as a modern training center under Maersk Training, the institution has played a key role in improving safety for Norwegian seafarers and offshore workers. With ever-increasing demands for emergency preparedness and safety, the Haugesund center continues to be a vital resource for the maritime and energy industries.
Through innovation and adaptation, the center has not only maintained its relevance but also strengthened its position as a leading provider of safety training, both nationally and internationally.
