HLO Basic Course

Target Group

Personnel who will perform helicopter deck crew functions.

The course provides qualification for the following positions:

• Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO)
• Helideck Assistant / Heliguard

• Weather reporting, communication, and procedures
• Helideck regulations and guidelines
• Dangerous goods
• Aviation fuel
• Responsibilities of helideck crew during emergency and abnormal situations
• Human factors
• Helicopter types
• Fire theory
• Firefighting agents and their use
• Practical fire training at the safety centre

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, participants shall be able to:

• Describe the organisation of emergency preparedness on offshore installations and the purpose of such organisation
• Use the helideck manual
• Perform communication and weather reporting with helicopters
• Explain helideck regulations and guidelines
• Handle dangerous goods
• Describe and carry out inspections of the fuel system
• Perform HLO duties during emergency situations and normal helideck operations
• Identify different helicopter types
• Use knowledge of fire theory and firefighting equipment to extinguish fires
• Select and use the correct firefighting agent
• Use personal protective equipment and breathing apparatus

Prerequisites

• GSK – Basic Safety and Emergency Preparedness Training

Assessment Criteria

Participants are assessed during all practical training sessions. If a participant does not pass the practical training, a justification will be provided.

After completion of the training, participants must pass a theoretical test. Failure to meet the competence requirements will result in a failed assessment.

Course Duration

4 days

• 1 day e‑learning (completed at home)
• 3 days practical training at the training centre

Course Validity

The course certificate is valid for 2 years.

Course Location

The course is offered at our training centres in:

• Stavanger
• Bergen
• Haugesund
• Kristiansund
• Grimstad

Preferred date and location can be selected from the course list.

Payment Options

Payment is made upon registration or upon arrival.
We also offer payment via Vipps or invoice.

Attendance

Courses normally start at 10:00 on the first training day unless otherwise stated in the course confirmation.
On remaining days, attendance starts at 08:30.

Clothing Requirements

All participants must bring wool underwear or non‑synthetic base layers.

Included in the Price

Lunch is included and served every training day.
